Carnegie Endowment for International
Peace. Computer Systems Manager.
5/98 - Present
Developed Intranet for CEIP, allowing
employees to fill out on-line forms, download accounting information,
view current budgets, view the latest conference center schedules,
watch short ScreenCam training sessions, etc.
Improved Web content and timeliness
by bringing Web hosting in-house and allowing direct updates by
each division. Also set up a RealVideo/RealAudio Linux server
to broadcast Endowment conferences.
Am team leader for Carnegie's Web
site re-design team. The Carnegie Endowment is in the process
of overhauling the entire site, moving to a database-driven design.
The new look will make the site much more dynamic, easy to navigate,
and easier to update. All pages will be branded with new Carnegie
logo.
Saved the Endowment thousands of
dollars a year, while at the same time, tripling Internet Bandwidth.
By combining Internet and phone over a full T1 line, the Carnegie
Endowment sharply reduced telecommunications rates.
Reduced trouble calls by 75% by
deploying 100 new PCs to all staff (replacing old 486 PCs). Total
deployment took five days, with minimal interruption. Raised nearly
$10,000 by selling old PCs.
Dramatically increased the use
of e-mail by replacing old system. This has led to a more responsive
organization and has increased communication on all levels. The
new system allows people to check their mail from home or travel,
access all messages (not just the in-box), and allows for a central
employee directory (while using a generic e-mail client). Also
created the ability for users to access network drives over the
Internet.
Transformed several paper processes
to digital processes. Developed a conference room reservation
system that automatically generates contracts and bills to send
to our customers. Developed a resume tracking program that allows
HR to easily print rejection post cards, as well as track applicant
statistics.
Increased computer proficiency
by developing training classes for Netscape Messenger, Lotus Organizer,
Symantec Act, Advanced Word, and Internet Search Engines. I wrote
a manual for each class.
Greatly increased network speeds
by updating entire internal network, including a new file server,
network switches, etc
Significantly improved the Endowment's ability to communicate
by implementing a new central database. This involved merging
eight database programs into one central database with seamless
blast e-mail and blast-fax capability (while allowing for personalized
messages for each fax or e-mail).
Eliminated meeting conflicts by
implementing a centralized calendar program.
